After I finished tracing the leaf form I began to work on the hair. I used the pen tool for the leaf, but since my hair is sort of wavy and slightly unruly I decided to use a different tool, the paintbrush tool seemed to work well for what I was wanting to do.

Nice cameo direction. The bold leaf makes for a successful backdrop. (I would rethink the vein coming out of the nose.) By contrast the outlines in the hair seem less confident and thin. See if you can simplify the hair, neck area and stem. A look at the art of Aubrey Beardsley may be helpful, specifically hair.
